What is the D-PPAC?

The Daily version of PROactive Physical Activity in COPD (D-PPAC) is a hybrid instrument that aims at measuring physical activity experience. It covers two domains: the amount of physical activity and the difficulty during physical activity. Additionally, it reports a total score combining both domains.

The D-PPAC consists of nine items (seven questions from a patient reported questionnaire and two outputs from an activity monitor). The D-PPAC questionnaire is intended to be completed daily by people with COPD, while they are wearing the activity monitor for a seven-day period. This daily assessment provides valuable information on changes in the physical activity experienced over time, inlcuding information on worsening, improvement and stabilisation. The domains are distributed as follows:

  • The amount of physical activity domain is covered by the first two items of the questionnaire (regarding the amount of walking outside and the amount of chores performed outside), and by two outputs from an activity monitor (Vector Magnitude Units per minute (VMU/min) and steps/day).
  • The difficulty during physical activity domain is covered by the remaining five items of the questionnaire.
  • The total score is calculated as the average of both the amount and difficult domains.
